Design, serving the needs of the man

This book has been written to tell about design-and in particular, engineering design. We hope to transmit the excitenment that is a part of finding technical solutions to some of the more important needs of man. Design is a creative and stimulating activity, often as much akin to art and architecture as to science. We want to show that, to be succesful in the future, designer in our technological environment must be both versatile and sensitive. The cannot be the single-minded drudges they have so often been pictured. We want to show where engineers and technologists are needed, what they should know about the problems of people, about nature, about man and his environment. And finally, we will tell how the design professional goes about his work.
